Soweto

South of Johannesburg is Soweto, a city developed as a township for black people under the apartheid system. Most of the struggle against apartheid was fought in and from Soweto. The name Soweto is an acronym, made up - in apartheid days - from the first letters of the words “south western township”.

Head out to the famous suburb of Orlando West for a unique experience. Get to know Soweto by walking the streets and learn the township lingo, join our tours – cycling or walking - play soccer with the locals, and watch the big games. Volunteer in one of our community projects and meet people that make development happen. Take a walk to museums, restaurants and shebeens, visit the church and sing to the gospel tunes. Enjoy a delicious barbecue around the camp fire and dance to the local beats from drums and kwaito music.

We're proud to be one of the few black-owned backpackers and one of the few backpackers in a black community in South Africa 2007 Tourism Investment Award winner. Don’t miss the opportunity to indulge in home-made Soweto stews, curries, spicy and mild salads, and our tasty barbecues. Enjoy the cosy outdoor area with fireplace, hammock, outdoor games and our funky beach bar, and listen and dance to African beats and reggae rhythms.

fact, the area of Soweto that can rightly claim this distinction is Pimville. It was a shanty town known as Skom in the 60s. In the 70s, the area was developed and families were housed in four-room houses and the area was thereafter known as Klipspruit.

We offer three double rooms as well as a self-catering flatlet detached from the main house, with en-suite bathroom and kitchenette. All bedrooms feature separate entrances, TVs, fans, heaters, hairdryers and are equipped with beverage facilities and complimentary coffees and teas.
